Hey guys.I want to put a set of lights on the rear of my truck. Can I hook them to the backup wire? or do I need to run them on there own switch? Sorry if this is a repeat post. Thanks guys.....
You would be better off using the back up light wire to trigger a relay if you want them to always come on when you're in reverse. I wouldn't just tee them in. I just ran a wire from my upfitter switches. That way they don't always come on.
If you have the trailer towing package with the 7 pin plug, you can pull the backup light power from the center pin wire. There is plenty of juice there. That's where my WhiteKnight backup lights are connected (and where the install instructions say to go). That's two 55W lights.
Also, there was a seperate power wire from the backup light assembly for "full-time" power from the trailer plug. This is because the WhiteKnight backup light assembly has a three-position switch behind it for three options:
- Off
- Only come on with the backup lights
- Manual on (for when you just need light behind you at night for something)

If you have a receiver you can buy the White Night Reverse Light kit. The unit mounts to the receiver, There are 3 wires to hook up. The red wire to 12 volts, the yellow wire to the back up lights and the black wire to ground. the lights come on with the backup lights or you can put them on manually. There is a switch behind the unit to control how you want them to work. The lamps are 55 watts. They are bright.
