Coolant leak

I have 2001 f550 CC 4x4 78,285 miles on the od. I noticed a puddle under the truck the other day. Turned out to be antifreeze after a lot of looking found and confirmed two leaks. One is the lower radiator house where it connects to the engine. The other is coming from behind the pulley that drives the fan I believe this one is probably the pump. Just would like some advice on this before I start tearing into the truck. Instructions on how to change the water pump would be helpful if that is what it turns out to be.

Under the pulley is the weep hole for the pump bearing, if its leaking the pump will need to be replaced. There is an oring on that lower extension so that part may be leaking from there or dripping down from the weep hole.

Changing it out is simple just dont go over 18ft/lbs on the bolts. some sites quote 35 ft/lbs and that will strip the front cover out.

I figured it was the water pump I was just hoping it was something else. Any other tricks or tips on changing out the water pump?

It's no different than any other water pump. Bunch o' bolts and a messy liquid.

The truck has the green coolant in it right now. I was thinking about changing that to something that does not require that I test it all the time. What do you guys suggest? I've seen green (of course), yellow, gold, and red antifreezes out there.

I use Shell Rotella ELC, good for 300,000 miles.

Thanks for the advice. Changed out the water pump this morning. Went pretty easy until I tried to remove the sensor from the old pump. The damn thing wouldn't come out started to round out on me when I put the wrench on it. Got pissed and five minutes with a Dremel tool with a cut off wheel solved the problem good thing they don't have a core charge. The weep hole on the old pump was wet full of muck and there was something rattling inside the pump (I'm guessing it's not supposed to do that).

I couldn't find the rotella so I settle on some stuff called Final Charge. I could only find it in the 50/50 form which is a real rip off considering that they usually charge the same for full strength and you can then mix it with a .64 gallon of distilled water. I drained the block and flushed the engine. Even though I drained the block using the two plugs in the back off the engine I could only get 6 gallons of coolant back in the truck when I was done flushing. Since the truck holds eight I'm a little worried about that the mix is not 50/50 anymore.

Followed the directions and ran the heater during the flush so I guess so. Dumped a ton of water onto the thing.

About five hours to change out the pump and flush the system not including beer breaks. was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Be careful when replacing the block plugs if your engines hot especialy on the passenger's side.

I use/sell/install the Evans Waterless Coolant. I use the exact/same procedure on every Powerstroke truck when I install it. Even though every book I have looked at says that the system capacity of all 99 -02 trucks is 33 quarts, the only one I have done that took 33 was my own '02 F-350. All of the rest of the 99-02's that I have converted have been F-250's and everyone of them has only taken 26 - 27 quarts, and all of them have tested at less than 2% water when I finished. Perhaps your F-550 is the same as those.
