Well, after changing out almost my whole differential, i'm still getting a slight thumping noise when my Expy is downshifting from 2nd to 1st or from 1st to second. I've changed the ring gear and pinion, all the bearings, and a differential repair kit (the small 4 gears).
Ford had noticed that when they were assembling it back that the bearing on the ring gear housing came off when they pulled it off by hand (which shouldn't be the case according to them). They told me that is should change the housing (it's on order) that the ring gear sits on so the bearing will fit tight. Could this be the reason why i'm still getting a thump when shifting from 1st to 2nd and downshifting as well?
It doesn't happen all the time, since i've got my expy out of the shop it's happened twice. I hope it won't screw anything up, i just spent
a lot of $$$ on the differential and i don't want to have to change anymore parts again...
On the upshift and downshift from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 1st. the stealership told me i have to change the ring gear housing cuz the bearing comes off easily which may be the reason for the thump noise. for the past few days, it hasn't been happening but i don't want to wait til i screw something else in the differential. I'm tired of dropping so much money in my truck.
If the bearings have enough play, then the carrier may be moving. If that's the case, you'd see gouge marks or possibly broken teeth on with the ring or pinion gears. If the bearings are mounted tightly to the carrier, and lift out of the housing easily, there's nothing really wrong with that. How did the side gears look? Is this a limited slip rear?
It is a limited slip diff. I already changed the ring and pinion gear. The gears themselves looked fine. No gouge marks or missing teeth on the ring or pinion gear. It was just the 4 small gears or side gears that were missing some teeth. I've changed all the side gears, ring gear and pinion, the shims, bearings EVERYTHING.
The only thing that the stealership told me is that the bearings on the ring gear housing can come off by hand which shouldn't be the case so they told me to buy a new housing. I expected that when i changed out my ring gear and pinion (there was a "problem" with the pinion spline) that everything would be ok. Well, obviously it's not.
Shifty from AWD to $-Hi and see if the thump is still with you. If it is...
Drop the rear drive line. Put it in 4-Hi and run on the front axle. Use the same driving characteristics and see if the thump is replicated.
The carrier pulling out of the housing is not a big deal. As long as the the bearing caps are torqued there would not be a problem at all with it coming out by hand.
Thanks Monsta. More torsional value is delivered to the differential in the lower gears. My thoughts are, the LS clutch packs are loading and unloading on the spider gears and making the thumping sound.
Could be. I'm not really a big fan of LS diffs. Try setting the axle on stands. Leave the ransmission in park, Grab a tire and try to roll it forward, then backward, HARD. See if you can replicate your noise.
