Looking to get the best tire set i can for size 315/75/r16........need opinions on the following tires as far as wear; ROAD NOISE; and handling go....
1.Nitto Terra Grappler A/T
2.ProComp Extreme A/T
3.Cooper Discovery A/T
4.General Grappler A/T2's
(does anyone have these Generals? Heard from a few they are pretty good)
I have the Pro Comp Xtreme A/T's on my '04 and with 10K on the tires I have not one complaint. They are as quite as the factory Goodyear AT/S's that came on my truck but perform/handle better in all conditions. Plus they have good looks. They call them a A/T but are more like a A/T - M/T hybrid. Pro Comp is owned/manufactured by Cooper Tire. The Cooper Discoverer ATR is also a very good tire, but not quite as agressive as the Pro Comps. They are a good replacement tire and alot of guys run them. Also very quiet.
Nitto, well some people like them others do not. Nitto and Toyo are the same company, but it seems like more people prefer the Toyo's.
General, I had a set of General's on my dually (not the A/T2's) that lasted a whole 30K. Also knowing that General is Continental Tire and the complaints about the factory Continental tires on the new trucks and how fast they wear out, I think I would stay away.
I currently am running BFG A/T's on my truck. I have, so far, no complaints with them. I do not get much road noise at all and they hold up pretty well. I have roughly 30K miles on this set so far, and they are holding up well. I have also heard the BFG M/T's are a good tire too, but I have not run these before.
In the past, on my old F150, I ran the Nitto Terra Grappler's and I absolutely loved those tires. They were aggressive enough for what I needed, yet still held up on the road well, and the road noise was slim to none.
Don't know if this makes you decision easier or not, but this was my experience as far as tires go on my trucks.
I have the Cooper's on my truck, only 265/75R16 though.
They do wear a lot - I have put only about 5K miles on my truck since I got the tires, but LOTS AND LOTS of stop and go.
The fronts are more than 50% gone. I am not easy on them on the street, so that might be part of it.
The rears, are baloney skins. But then, I have a limited-slip, a V10, and a heavy HEAVY right foot...
Traction? GREAT! Took them into Upstate NY when new, and on mixed clay/rock (VERY slippery) I was able to drag a 1000lbs (or more) 2-foot diameter tree with ease.
For the price, I'm going right back to get another set in a few weeks

ON EDIT: There is some road-noise. About the same as the BFG's I had on my '74 highboy...
I have the Nitto Terra Graps 325/65/r18's Cannot say enough good stuff about them. Completely silent on the road, look good, handles wet roads very well.
I have always been a BF good At guy, but I like these better.
I have nitto's 285/65/18's and love them. Extremly better then the crap stock conti's. Not much road noise if any at all and handle well on wet road and off road. Nice AT tire as far as I am concerned.
I just put on a set of the Nitto Tera Grapplers; 295/75/16. I've only got about 2k miles on them so far, and they show no signs of wear, but the seem to be made of relatively soft rubber. As far as looks, traction, and handling, they are awesome. The sidewall "biters" look really good, even though I doubt they are functional. They don't seem to hydroplane at all, and have performed great in snow; I think they will perform pretty well in light mud, but it doesn't look like they will clean themselves too well for deep mud (hopefully, I'll find out for sure in a couple of weeks). Road noise is only slightly more than stock, and not really noticable. Not to mention the price was great, $154/wheel mounted & balanced. Good luck!
All the Cooper/Pro Comps I have seen have been made here in the USA.
BFG is Michelin and I have seen some of their tires over here that were made in France. Although I believe they were Michelin's and not BFG's, can not remember.
Not sure about Toyo/Nitto. I had a set but not long enough to pay attention to the location of manufacture.
If you are looking for true American tires, I believe that Cooper and Goodyear are the only American owned tire companies left. Goodyear's top off brand is Kelly Tires, while Cooper has Mastercraft. Cooper also owns/manufacturers Mickey Thompson, Dick Cepek and Pro Comp.
Ive had coopers, dunlop mud rovers, wranglers, ground hawgs, bf g's and several more brands in the last 25 years. The set that I had on my durramax when I just traded it were the best all around tires I have ever owned. Firestone Destination MTs. Very quiet, agressive in the mud/ sand. I think I had around 30,000 miles on them when I got rid of the truck. A buddy of mine has a very simular set of bridgestones on his truck but he only puts 8,000 miles a year on the truck so we dont know how many miles they are good for. The stock BFGs that came on my f250 seem ok for now.
I'm thinking of going with either BFG's, Michelin, or Toyo's. I never seem to get good mileage with Goodyear. I have heard of the Cooper's being spoke of highly. As far as Firestones, I wouldn't put them on anything, even if they were for free
Cooper Discover ATs on my rig. I love them. No noise and they're wearing well. I bought them over the BFG All Terrain because they are American owned and Made. So far I can't tell a difference between the two. I had the BFGs on my 04 F250.
I gambled and got the General Grabbers AT2 295/7?/16 replaced my 35's (not snow friendly). I like them. They make alittle noise on the highway and are wearing well. I think there a 40,000 mile tire, work real good in the snow/rain and can still make smoke.
