Question choke voltages

Hi everyone,
does anyone know what the correct voltage is at the choke and where does it get the power source from. sorry the truck is a 78 with stock carb. the wire as of now comes from the alternator and im getting about 6.43 volts. i would think that is a bit low like 6 volts. but if any of you smart guys out there think you have an idea please pass it my way

thanks alot
jim

The power for the stock choke assist mechanism comes from the alternator stator and the voltage varies with the power output of the alternator. Sounds like you have it hooked up right.

It comes from the alternator so it doesn't start to open with the key on unless the truck is running. It needs full voltage (12+) or it wont open all the way. As I understand it. I don't know why you wouldn't have 12 when running. Do you have a dash voltmeter or warning light?

Sorry Bear that is incorrect.

The OEM carb choke assist voltage never goes to 12 volts. It comes from the stator connection to the alternator and not from the output. The electric choke assist does not open the choke. The choke is opened and kept open by hot air from the choke stove in the crossover passage. The electric element just helps open it faster for emissions and fuel economy reasons. It is never connected to 12 volts or it will burn out.

I just put a new choke thermostat in my 84 a few months ago. While at it I measured the voltage and had about 7.5-8 volts. 6 volts does not sound unreasonable. I wonder if the voltage increases with rpm? I did not try that. I did check the Ohms across the element and had 12.5 ohms.

Just FYI

The aftermarket Edelbrock and Holley etc electric chokes do use system voltage which should be between 12 and 14.2VDC. On those aftermarket systems the hot air from the engine choke stove is not used and the choke is totally electric.
