Wheel Bearing Replacement
I have a 92 XLT, 5.8L-AT that is in great shape but has lots of miles. The rear end has the same drive train slack that BriSan's post remedies (thanks BriSan) but my rig also appears to have a couple of wheel bearings where the seals are leaking.
How tough are changing those out? I also want to make sure the bearings, gears, ring and pinion, etc., are okay as well. I'm planning on keeping the truck for a long time so I want it fixed right.
My skills are that of your typical 'backyard mechanic'. I don't need a prescription from a certified mechanic to use my tools but on the other hand I sometimes should have adult supervision ;-)
Am I better off to have a shop do this or can it be done relatively easy?
I have changed the rear wheel seals, but never the bearings. The seals again, and difficult to get in straigt, but with a little patience, they can be done. The bad part about the rear is you have to remove the diff cover, drain the fluid (as if you had a choice), remove the C-clips and pull the axle shafts out in order to get at the seals. Make sure you remove all the brake compenents as well. It should take a Saturday or so to do. Make sure you have enough gear oil, and a new diff cover gasket prior to starting the job.
Good Luck!
