I have a 1997 ford f150 xlt... Will a lightning front bumber work?

You will need the 4 brackets and if you don't get a '99+ grille there will be a funny gap in the middle. The bumper pads are also different so you would need them as well.

so yes and No.

Which four brackets are you speaking of, the ones that come stock with the 99 lightning?

Yes the 4 bumper brackets, they are different from '97 brackets, they don't have to be from an L though Ford standardized their bumpers in '99+, unlike '97 and '98 where 2wd and 4wd were different. Pick up an LMC catalog and they have a very good exploded view of all the brackets, there might even be 6 of them total.
