Vaccum Controled Temp. Problem

I got 82 f250 and the vaccumed control temperature control and the selection of what thing you wnat to use (vent, ac, defrost) doesn't work right. First off, the temp switch under the hood doesn't move. How does that work? Then, the selection thing for use doesn't really work. All it can do is turn the a/c compressor on and put the air out the defrost vent. The regular vent doesn't work nor does the floor. How does this all work. I beleive there is a leak somewhere. When I would press the brakes in, you can hear a leak some where of vaccum.

This is a common part that fails for some reason after so many years of use.

Mounted just above the dash controls is the A/C Vacuum Control Temperature Valve..translation...a multiported vacuum manifold with a kicker switch on it. From Ford, the whole assembly comes as a unit, but aftermarket, just the kicker switch can be purchased. This vacuum manifold valve has been troublesome from day one. I'd look at that first.

If you want to check the vacuum supply, look on the firewall under the hood, and follow the line from there over to the passenger side of the truck. Make sure everything is still hooked up and in good shape.

I just fixed this same problem on mine. The vacuum line was rotted where it comes out of the cab into the engine compartment. Replaced it, and the defrost/vent door opens and closes correctly again. Remove your glove box, then take off the piece covering the heater core and you can see the door.

i got a similar problem. it blows out of the main vents all the time. it will open up the defroster and floor but they don't blow good because the main vents are still open. i looked under there and there is only one cable for the temp. control. it looks like there should be another cable connected to the vent selector as there is a cable mount. this is a vacuum system. the a/c compressor does turn on with the vent selector though
