hey guys i have a 92 f-sd rollback that i just put a good used non turbo 7.3 in.it starts and idles great, thanks to you guys and a return line kit. she runs perfect up to about 2200 rpm, then she starts to sputter and spit out blue smoke. i've checked the fast idle, cleaned the cdr, new filters, and new fuel. the truck had 188k before the new motor and did sit idle for about three years with no motor in it before this one. i'm wondering if the exhaust system could be blocked and causing this. i did notice with the air filter housing off i would get some smoke from the intake or cdr. any help as usual will be greatly appreciated!
Any time things sit idle like that in my area mice have a home built ASAP. The mufler could be full or even just bad...... The advance on the IP could also be part of the problem, or timing of the engine...... what all did you do to the engine you installed what is the history.... have you tested the fuel lift pump pressure.....
.................................................
Take the filter header Schrader valve core out and hook a hose and pressure guage to the outlet.........crank engine see what you get for pressure, should have 4-6 psi from a good lift pump.
Volume test same place hook a hose to it crank over the engine 10 seconds you should get 1/3 pint of fuel minimum or 1 pint at 675 rpm in 30 seconds... engine running
Important the fuel shutoff solenoid (FSS) wire on the IP should be disconnected if you do not want a start just cranking. Re connect FSS after test complete.
thanks plc7.3. yeah i had to clean two nests out of the radiator. i heard the engine run fine before it came out of the other truck. i' ve replaced the lift pump, tank selector valve, any rubber fuel lines. my fuel pressure is fine off the schrader valve. the timing lines on the ip line up perfect. it sounds like i have an exhaust leak on the pass. side and i didn't hear one from the header gasket before i got the engine, that's why i'm asking about the exhaust?
Sitting is prolly one of the worst things you can do to a vehicle, especially outside.
The muffler COULD be rusted tight. You COULD have something growing in the tanks. You COULD have rusted fuel lines.
There's just so many things that can rust out, when left sitting outside.
I think PLC is on the right track. Do the Fuel Pump Check, and catch the fuel in a CLEAN container. Inspect the fuel for color/contminants. You might need to change the filter again. If the tanks sat low, or empty. They condense much more water vapor.
i'll change the filter again, but i dropped the front tank, drained and cleaned it. the fuel i took out was supprisingly clean. it now has new fuel in it. does it point to anything more certain since the smoke is blue, does that mean it's probably fuel related?thanks again.
thanks for the help. when i got back into the truck i noticed that at some point i had switched to the rear tank, which i have not cleaned out. i must have picked up some trash from there. i changed the filter again and that did it. sometimes you can't see the forrest for the trees.thanks again.
whits......there is a misconception re crud in the tanks.........if the truck is used regularly there should be NONE........ if it sits for extended periods 3-6 months or longer then Biomatter can and will grow causing some amazing problems........with the fuel system.
I dropped my rear tank after 13 years of ownership and you could eat off the bottom.......
