Water temperature sensor

Does the temperature sensor on a 351 Bronco (1994)have any reason to be connected other than indicating water temperature. Will it cause any issues if I disconnect it and install a mechanical unit?

good question, I looked at my wiring diagram for my 95 bronco and I don't see any wires going anywhere but from the sender to the gauge. Good luck, Ben
