How do you remove the drive gear at the bottom of a Duraspark II distributor and a Duraspark III also? I need to swap parts. I can't seem to find any info. on the Duraspark in particular. It seems on some other Makes you just remove the pin and pull. Well, I removed the pin and pulled. Pulled like hell and it doesn't budge! Help appreciated.
Closely compare the Duraspark II distributor that you want to use with the original EEC distributor for equal housing and shaft dimensions (i.e., everything below where the distributors mate with the engine block surface). If they aren't identical then it won't work! I'm almost positive you need a Duraspark II (single vacuum advance) distributor for a '81 or '82 F250 with 351W. All '83s came with EEC (50 states). I'm pretty sure '80 and earlier 351Ws had different shafts. See Cardone # 30-2895 or 302895 at Autozone or Advance Auto parts. If the one you bought at Schucks is not the correct one for your engine, you may be able to return/swap for the correct one if you haven't damaged it in trying to remove the gear.
I have heard from a deisel mechanic that had the same problem, same engine, same year, and also from california. What I have to do is get the Duraspark ignition system for an 85' 351w but a Canadian model. This is the only one with the correct size shaft and gear size. Supposedly they went out of production 12 years ago so I have to do some calling around. I cold go back to the original I suppose but that's Duraspark III and I'm trying to switch over to II so I have to look a bit. Like you said, I have looked at Duraspark II distributors from 77' to 84' and all of them either have the wrong size shaft, the wrong size gear, or both.
Another thing to look at is the durspark I distributor. See if anyone has one to compare it. They came on the '75 model Bronco's with a blue duraspark box. You might get lucky.
Have you taken the reluctor off the top and the plate out of the housing? If so turn the distributor housing upside down on a couple of blocks of wood so the shaft is free. Take a brass punch and a hammer and hit the lower end of the shaft, the drive gear should start to come off. After it breaks loose you can move them pretty easy.
