6 Speed grinds into 2nd

I have a 148K mile F250 2WD that I just bought and unless I am very very gentle, it grinds going into 2nd. Any recommendations that would be cheaper than $1800 for a rebuilt tranny? I hate to spend that much cash, when 5 of the 6 gears work great. Is it strange that I have this problem? I haven't heard of much problems with the 6 speeds.

Thanks,

Joe

We had a 99 at work that an idiot mechanic put the clutch disc in backwards and an even bigger idiot employee who drove the truck anyway until the new clutch disintegrated. After replacing the clutch again the transmission would grind very bad going into second. It ended up being a bent shift fork, so we got the transmission rebuilt. If it’s not grinding when you’re gentle, I’d be gentle.

mine used to do that going into 3 rd. In my case Ford replaced all the synchro's under warranty, it stopped for a while. Perhaps also doing a double clutch into 2nd and/or using synthetic fluids will help a bit longer. Had a VW bug that lasted for 10 years that way until I finally got fed up and replaced the tranny.

good luck

Pull the trans, I bet you have a shot pilot bearing that is causing a misalighment on the clutch..I bet you need a clutch as well, and if the clutch hasn't been done, then yeah you will need a input shaft as well...
