I have had only 3 problems with my 1996 Bronco since buying it January 2000. In November 2000 the starter went out. This seemed legit at the time since the vehicle had 80,000 miles. I was out of town at the time and had the starter replaced at a local garage – mistake. They were a very shady garage and in May 2001 (6 months later), my starter went out again. Normally this would seem odd, in my case this seemed very skeptical because of the shady shop in November. Now in November 2001 (6 months later) my Bronco won’t start again. It gets full power and lights. Listening to it, I hear constant clicking at the fender mounted relay (solenoid). I assumed that was the problem because it repeatedly clicks and is not turning and if I hold my hand on the panel next to the relay, I could feel major vibrations there. I tried bit could not jump the fender mounted relay. So I replaced the relay ($13) and my truck still didn’t start. NowI don’t know what the problem is. I don’t think it’s another starter because of the clicking I hear at the relay. I’m going to check all of my wires and my ignition switch. Any other advice? Could it be my neutral safety start trans switch that people have talked about? All help is greatly appreciated.
Could be a loose wire on the starter, or the ground wire that goes from the battery to the block could be loose. Sounds like maybe the sheetmetal is grounded, but the engine block may not be grounded.
Franklin2 has a good point, carefully inspect all battery cables, being sure to check under the insulation just behind the connectors, it's not at all uncommon for corrossion to form here but you can't see it right away. Otherwise, I might suspect the starter. See if you're getting power down to the starter when the solenoid is engaged. Maybe even try pounding on the starter while someone attempts to crank it for u (hey, it works sometimes LOL).
