'99 won't start after warm

My '99 ford will start fine when cold, then I can drive 15 minutes or so--and it won't re-start--You turn the key and nothing, all the gauges work fine though. After 30-60 minutes it starts fine again. Is this the solenoid on the starter? Please help---getting tired of leaving it running everytime you need to go somewhere!

Yup, the solenoid is hot causing resistance to it (blame the hotter climate and/or engines), which prevents the ignition switch wire from engaging it. Try this test: if the wire to solenoid gets 12 volts when cranked, and if you can "short" the starter into turning using the heavy battery cable connected to the solenoid post, then you have this "hot starter problem". Don't bother getting another starter, it will occur again. Instead do a web search on the above qoute.

A little more info: new battery, 5.4L, automatic, 2wd. It has 84,000 miles and after you drive it, if you turn it off for up to 10 minutes, it will restart. After 10 minutes, forget about it. You are stranded anywhere from 30 minutes to 2hrs. I looked on the firewall, and didn't see any solenoid, so I'm guessing that it's on the starter. I originally was going to change the starter, and I got the 2 lower bolts out, but couldn't get to the top bolt. If it's just going to be the starter or solenoid on the starter, I guess I'll muster up the patience to change it. Thanks for the input so far!

Interesting, your Ford does not have a firewall mounted relay....
Try this site for the relay installation http: //www.novaresource.org/starter.htm

Yeah, I thought so too! I own 3 F-150's and this is the first one that I can't find the solenoid. The Positive cable runs through fusible links and into wire loom that is part of the wiring harness. It then goes down towards the starter. I can only assume it goes straight to the starter, as I haven't physically traced it all the way down. The battery is rather large and takes up most of the fender well. Anywhere else the solenoid would be located? Thanks for all your help so far!

Well, I changed the solenoid (thanks Silan for the diagram, the previous owner had re-located the solenoid) and it's been about a month with no problems. A $10 solenoid had me losing sleep at night!
