I love mythbusters but sometimes they are not very accurate. Did ya'll see where they tested ac on vs windows down? They tested this at 45 mph and said ac is less efficient saying that the drag caused by the windows being down was not significant enough to use more fuel than running the a/c. If they had tested it at say 70 or 80 mph this would have significantly increased the drag but they did not even mention the affect of a higher or lower speed.
As for the truck mpg I wish they would have gone to a wind tunnel and tested the coefficient of drag. I think that with the tailgate up the bed will fill with air and affectively create a higher air pressure inside the bed acting as if there was a cover over the bed.
But hey that could just be my imagination working overtime.
I thought it was them, but apparently since they came up with different results, it was not.
Supposedly a "scientific" test came up with the conclusion that below 55 MPH, it's better with the windows down, A/C off. 55 MPH and up, put the windows up and turn the A/C on.
I want to know what my little rain deflectors over the windows do to mileage.
LOL yeah now that you mention it our vent shades will throw off all of the scientific research. My cb whip has got to be destroying my mileage I mean this thing is 1/8" in diameter.
And the driving lights in my grille, the running bars on the bed, the TAILGATE TRIM! OH MY GOD kiss my mileage goodbye!
If I cared about mileage...I wouldn't own a half ton with a 454... 8 MPG on a good day... I guess we pay for our horsepower... But when you put the skinny pedal down...oh it's worth every penny.
How about Al Gore pulls the loads some of us make our trucks pull on a day to day basis, then he can go complain all he wants about the horrible damage we're obviously doing to the enviroment for no good reason.
Amazingly enough, trucks have a place in this world.
Like in a bar,,,,politics, religion and OJ ( Oj Simpson) shouldn't be brought up in this forum. I just couldn't resist.... So drag means nothing when your under heavy load,,,,, rr a just throwing that out there to get back on topic
On my 97 F-150 reg cab short bed truck w/4.6 auto, I got better mileage with a tonneau cover on the bed. I averaged 17 to 18 mpg around town. Now I do good to get 17 and I can get 17 mpg IF I drive with a "light" foot.

the day they make an electric (or hybrid) 1/2 ton pickup thats big enough for me, my buddies, 2 or 3 motorcycles AND all our gear - THEN drive up rocky hills and thru deep sandy riverbeds - i wont just buy one - I'LL BUY TWO!!
maybe they can put a PA system on that Hubrid truck and run "real" engine sound effects through it. Just have to make it loud enough to drown out the electric motor whine.

LOL!!!
i thought about the same thing - just to enhance the 'hybrid' experience!!!!
