86 F150 Changing headlight switch
I have an '86 F150 that has problems with the instrument lights not working. The warning lights work okay, except for the turn signal lights on the dash. The parking and headlights work, which should be the same circuit as the instruments lights.
I was thinking that the common thread in all this would be the dimmer switch for the instruments, not sure about the turn signal lights on the dash though, do they go through the dimmer?
At any rate I bought a new headlight swich and was trying to figure out how to change it. From looking at the new switch and the old one it appears that there a hollow threaded nut that goes into the switch that clamps it to a piece of sheet metal that's behind the plastic panel of the dash.
I can't figure out how to get this piece plastic that goes behind the windshield and headlight switches out. Does it just snap in place? I don't see any screws that appear to hold it in.
Thanks,
Eric
You don't remove the plastic. You need to reach up under the dash to the headlight switch. On the top of the switch is a button. Disconnect the battery first. Pull the headlight switch out to turn on the headlights. Then push the button down & pull the lever out. Then you can get a screw driver in there to unscrew the switch. Any further questions PM me.
