Loud grind in front?
I have an 81 Bronco XLT and I have a problem. There is a loud grinding like noise that seems to be coming from the front of the vehicle. The sound is only present during acceleration but not present all the time. While the noise occurs there is a great deal of powere loss also. It sounds like metal grinding on metal or rock to rock. There is a good deal of vibration accompanied by the sound but the u joints checked okay. A shop told me the noise was coming from the a/c compressor. I took off the belt seeing as its winter and the noise didn't go away. The fan clutch seems pretty loose so I don't think that is the problem. Any ideas?

May sound kinda silly, but you may want to check your wheel bearings and hubs. If it's a full-time, might want to pull the front driveshaft if it's not wheel bearings\hubs and take a test ride-just in case it's coming from the back but reverbin' thru the front driveline.

W/out more info I'm gonna vote for t-case, or tranny if it's a manual - I don't think an auto is likely to make such noises. Start by checking your fluid levels in both, look for poss water contamination too. I filled by 1356 t-case w/water once and it was NOT happy driving 3 highway hours back from Moab LOL! It sounded much like you describe, I was certain it would seize at any moment. Also had an '88 Bronco w/M5OD that sounded somewhat similar in 2nd and 4th, just due to high mileage. Whaddya want from a Mazda tranny??
