Your first intuition is right ..... run ..... run like the wind away from the auto hubs
And honestly I have never heard the words "auto locking hubs" and "good or better" used in the same sentence at the same time.

Go back in the archives both in this forum and in the big Bronco forum to about last September/October - you know, about when the snow flies. Look and see how many threads people started with a subject similar to "4x4 not working" and see how many of those ended up being broken auto hubs.
Just because one person (or two, in this case) haven't had any problems with their auto hubs does not mean that they're reliable.
If I live to be 100, I will still be getting out of the truck to lock my front hubs when I need them. Because when I need them, I NEED them.

2 weeks ago I was at a junkyard and went to engage mine and they wouldn't. It's a 96 with only 65,000 miles on it. The mechanic told me those were notorious for going bad. I went and had manual hubs put on for 200. At least now I don't have to worry about it. If I think I might need 4x4 I can just get out and put it in.

I've blown several of them and done somespinde and body damage . But I have auto on my truck because I drive 1 1/2 hr and with the sudden weather changes in PA they are nice (But I carry a tow chain ). With manuals if you leave them locked in you have the bad mileage and both front tires sliding on you. But I put manuals on in spring to go in woods to get firewood.
I'd contact warn and other hub companies and see I have never seen any other than HI's scout auto hubs and they won't work on yours or mine. I don't know what they put on 4x4 ambulances youd think they would have something.
