light wiring

I bought a rear view camera. I know the directions call for it to be wired into the back-up lights but I want more control. I was thinking of just wiring it into my regular lights. My question is, once I get back to the rear of the truck is it the same wiring for the lights themselves? I want the camera to come on whether I switch the day time running lights or the regular lights on.

Thanks in advance.
Jay

nevermind. I just went ahead and wired into the reverse light. I tried the license plate light but didn't get anything but a broken light.

I just bought the $98 camera at walmart. Works pretty well for such a small screen. I haven't decided where to mount the screen just yet. Since it plugs into the aux power port I may just keep it in the in a pocket and plug it and use it when needed.

Hi Jay, I'm guessing you bought the little VR3 at Walmart?

Mine came with both a "lighter-plug" adapter and a "bare-wire" cord for the little LCD monitor. I used heavy-duty double sided foam tape and stuck it on the back side of the driver's sunvisor on the flat plastic mirror door. Then I snaked the wire over the top of the visor and down behind the left pillor molding and down to behind the dash and hard-wired it in. That way when I need to see it when backing up, I just flip my visor down and click the power button. It's light enough that I can still use my sun visor with no problems.

For the camera, I made a bracket that mounts to the very top of the back of the bumper and the camera is mounted to that bracket, so the camera is just right above the license plate. The brack is bent down about 30-40 degrees so that the camer is pointing right at the trailer hitch (which is what I wanted to see when backing up to a trailer.)

Nice little unit. And I too just wired into the backup light power so the camera only comes on when backing up.

That's the one I got. It did come with some options for the monitor mounting and power supply. I don't have the time to mess with it to much today. I suppose the visor mounting works well for keeping the glare down and not cluttering up the dash.

I'll probably play with it this weekend.

My main concern was being able to see kids behind the truck when I am picking my son up from school but the trailer issue is high on the list too.
