I think its the same for all broncos, not sure though.
pull the speedo cable out of the tail section of the transfer case and see what color the gear is. I just changed mine. original gear was red 21t, changed to natural color 19t. Here is the color code:
wine= 16t
white= 17t
yellow=18t
natural=19t
black=20t
red=21t
if your changing speedo gears to recalibrate for larger tires, here is how you calculate it.
original tire size in inches(use a metric conversion to get the inch size), multiply that by the number of teeth on the speedo gear. take that number and divide it by the new tire size. that will tell you what gear to use.
Example:
My original tires size was 29" and speedo gear was red 21t
21 x 29 = 609. I put 32" tires on. take the 609 and divide it by 32, 609 divided by 32 = 19. I put a 19t gear in and my speedo and odometer are now correct for the tire size.
Hope this helps
Bill
Yeah, I was going through my JBG catalog and it just had me curious as to what was on the end of the cable. I'll probably end up checking it in the next few weeks when I get a chance to get it in the garage to start my brake conversion. Thanks for the info Bill.
No problem. If I know the answer to some one's question, I'm more than happy to pass it along to a fellow bronco owner. I'm a relativly new bronco owner my self. I had my 85 fsb in storage for 8 years. I worked on it for the past year and now it's been on the road for a month now. From setting so long, now that its on the road, I'm replacing and repairing all kinds of stuff on a weekly basis. I did hours and hours of reserch on bronco forums like this on and asked many questions. The internet has so much info it was a life and money saver for me.
Good luck with yours.
Bill
I completely agree with you on the use of the internet, especially this site, for info and money savings. I just got done looking at what needs to be done under the hood today, and decided to do a few small things to last me the spring and summer leading into a rebuild and 351M to 400 conversion. Good luck to you on your build as well Bill, hopefully we won't need to much!
