What will cause moisture build up on the inside of the oil fill cap? Noticed this milky almost like grease build up on the inside of the cap the last few oil changes. Havent noticed anything unusual in the oil itself.
This was covered by a thread just a couple weeks ago. Do a search on this and there should be a couple threads about it come up. I think the reason for the moisture was short trips with the engine not getting hot enough. Hope this helps.
It is due to condensation. Water is a byproduct of combustion. There is very, very trace amounts of it in the crankcase and is usually evaporated after the engine and everything has been full warmed up and operational (it exits via the PCV system). When there is short trips in cold climates, the water condensates on something that remains cool like the oil cap. The oil cap is plastic and does not conduct heat like the metal engine components, so it condenses there.
Yeah, according to some of the other peoples info that I have read, that sounds like that could be your problem. Like osteadoc08 said, no big deal just wipe it off.
I get the residue at the bottom of the filler cap as well. For warranty purposes I'm still getting the oil changed at the dealer and just before I go in I take the cap off and wipe off the gunk just so the dealer won't see it.
You also may have a small leak in your pcv system. My mountaineer had the pcv valve knocked out of the engine and it had moisture on the oil fill cap. Put it back in,no more moisture even with short trips. If it's still under warranty you may want the dealer to see this and correct the problem. There shouldn't be alot of moisture on the cap. This is a closed system. May be as simple as the cap not on tight.

Why do you wipe it off so the dealer won't see it?
If I thought there might be something wrong, I'd leave it on for the dealer to see, especially since it's still under warranty.
You need to get that truck out on the highway for at least a 20-mile round trip once a week. Four miles? Get a bicycle or walk it. At this rate you'll have to go by the severe service maintenance schedule, too.
