I have a 1949 F-1 with a flathead 6. The serial number plate is located on the engine wall and in the glove compartment. However, I have not located a similar number on the engine block. Is it possible do I determine if the engine is the original engine?

The engines have a generic series ID cast into them, and some have stampings on the block's top surface indicating their date of manufacture, but that doesn't relate directly to a specific car or truck. About all you can do is prove it isn't the original due to a complete mis-match, and on the 6-bangers I don't know how you would do that.
On my '52's V8, I was able to determine that it has a valve keeper arrangement that was only used in '51, so I knew the block wasn't original. Well, that and the fact that it had car-style water pumps, car-style pan, and a car intake manifold...
