I just bought a Magnaflow downpipe/cat kit (one cat replaces the stock two)and one of their 7" round truck mufflers for my 94 300 I-six.I had intended to do the work myself but due to time had a local exhaust shop do it.When I got there to pick up, they were having a tough time struggling to seal the front pipe at the manifold. Long story short, there's a small leak there, although visually everything looks right.Shop owner had me wear a stethoscope so I could hear it. he says pipe was not made quite right. He says he's confident it'll "rust in". Also had a new O2 sensor put in while they were at it. Anyways , nice sound and more power, especially on the high side but running a little goofy at times. Some vibrations, especially on de-acceleration. They disconnected battery for some reason. So here's the questions:A-Is PCM adjusting to the new system and O2 sensor? B-When they disconnected battery did PCM lose settings and needs a couple days to reset? C- Is the small leak where new pipe joins at manifold the problem? I have only driven the truck about 50 miles, and yes I have checked to see if any vacuum hoses came disconnected.
I guess the leak is at the ball and socket where it connects to the manifold, right? You may be able to seal it up with some Permatex "Ultra Copper" on the ball. It is reccomended by some header manuf. to put some on to help get a good seal.
They unplugged the battery because they probably did some welding on your exhaust and it is recommended to unplug the battery before welding.
Yeah, the leak is right where the new exhaust flanges to the manifold, if that's what you mean by ball and socket. Like I said, to look at it you would never know. The shop guy said it seemed to be made a little off kilter. He is willing to do whatever I want to make it right, including if I want to send the pipe back.As if they would take it back after I've been running it.Permatex copper, huh?
By "ball and socket" I mean there is a small protrusion where the flange is on the manifold that looks like a say 1" section has been cut out of a sphere and stuck on the end. The mating exhaust pipe is flared to accept the "Ball" and a collar with 2 bolts squeezes the flares and ball together to form a seal.
There also could be some rust, carbon or whatever that got stuck in the connection which is causing the leak. Or maybe the pipe has a flaw in it, who knows. A high temp gasket maker like Ultra Copper should seal it up.
Thanks for the info. I looked up the Permatex and I think thats what I'll do.I also sent an Email to Magnaflow to see if they have been having problems with this setup. If all else fails, being in the corrosion capital of the world might pay off for once. Expecting up to a foot of snow today and all the road salt that goes with it should rust it up in no time, lol!
