Well, I have checked the first three pages and did not find what I wanted, another ? like mine. Kinda rules out a common problem-the rear diff fluid level is once again dropping.
This is not a new problem, when I bought my '95 5L auto XLT the axle (not 9") was replaced under warranty because a humming I heard shortly after purchase was due to a bone dry rear diff. There was no indication where the leak was then.
Now the replacement (2years old) axle is leaking. The leak is slowwwwww, and no nice easy to see wet marks are present around gaskets, seams, joints and such. As for mods that might stress the axle, I "upgraded" to huge unable to climb in without assistance 32" tires-so there is little added stress from the tires. The engine is stock. As for driving, I drive minor tails and dirt roads once in a while. Is there a gasket which tends to fail? Do you know of a better way to look for leaks? Is this a common problem? Please help.
Howdy,I have a 95 bronco XLT 5.8 with 32's aswell. I recently discovered my rear axle leaking out of the diff. I replaced the pinion seal and on further inspection i came accross the axle seal on the axle shaft. After replacing that; i have not come accross any other axle leaks since then. A little yet bright light could aid in finding the leak, i used one to find the axle shaft seal leak. Also if your shaft seal is leaking, your rear brake drum may be wet inside and greasy. Just a few things to look at.
Hope this helps. Keep us informed.

It's most likely an axle seal. Pull both rear tires and slip the drums off. Look for any sign of gear oil in the drums, on any of the hardware, or on the shoes.
