it is an 85 with 6.9. new filter and lift pump on it. cranked it today after putting a different IP in it and drove it around. it ran good for at least 8 minutes then it started to cut out and die. when we got it to start back up i had the shrader valve open and nothing was there but air while it was running. it cranked but kept dying. finally got it to run long enough to park it. all the injectors were wet but not sure if that was because of us bleeding them or because the o rings are bad. the plastic caps on the injectors move easily around the injector. is that supposed to happen. does this sound like a return line problem or another problem before the filter. i have the return line kit to put on it but i forgot to bring it to the truck today.
was all the changes done at the same time? when was the lift pump installed ? was it running ok before the injection pump r&r ?
did you check the filter after it stopped running and was it full?
usually, if the return lines are bad they cause a problem after shutdown. they will leak like the dickens if they are leaking during engine run time.
before the IP it would run after pullstarted because of air and it would die when rpms were applied. so they put a new filter and lift pump on it but it did not help. i put a used IP from my parts truck and it cranked after much bleeding and pulstarting. it ran good for a few minutes. like i said all the injectors were wet and i am not sure if they are wet because of bleeding or leaking. we were driving for at least 10 minutes and they were still wet.
i forgot to mention that when we parked it we let it sit with the accellerator pushed slightly. it was just above idle about 200-300 rpms. when it started to bog, it was bellowing white smoke which is air. and then it died.
This really sounds like air getting into the system before the lift pump, cracked pick up tubes in tank, pin hole in supply line(fuel wont leak out but air will get sucked in), water seperator drain not sealed, or a faulty tank selector switch. You've already changed the "not running" components like lift pump and IP, so unless you stuck on bad parts, need to look else-where.
that is what i am also thinking. i think i got a good deal on the truck but trying to stay away from rebuilding the IP. when i get it to my house i plan on bypassing the tank valve and see what i get with that. would you pay 500 for this. it has 33's on it with ok tread left, a/c has been converted, 5 spd, gooseneck hitch and trailer brake controller. it also has a newer seat in it and true dual straights. it's loud. here is a pic
Starting and then stalling after a few seconds running sounds like the fuel filter is draining back to the tank. The IP has enough fuel in it to start and run, but when the air pocket in the fuel filter reaches the IP, it runs out of fuel.
That most likely is either the return line O rings or cracked return lines on the engine.

great, i bought the whole return line kit for the engine and i forgot to bring it. when i pick the truck up i am going to install it. how long should it take to dry the diesel on the injectors after bleeding them. when it died after 10 or more minutes of running good, the injectors still had diesel on them and when it died i had a bubble or two coming from one of the injector plastic caps.
After all the figiting you've done, the dryed up return lines/o-rings are leaking.
Usually, if I've done any work to the truck and need to dry the returns, I just give um a shot of compressed air. It'll blow any excess fuel off the tops of the inj nuts/returns.
Be very carefull NOT to get anything in the tops of the inj's while the hard lines are off.
While rethreading the hard lines back on, make sure not to cross thread them. Line the flair on the supply line with the flair on the inj, then push down on the supply line, while turning the nut. With a little wiggling, they'll start and thread down by hand.
i put the new injector return kit on and it still does it. while running i opened the shrader valve and nothing came out. i took it off while cranking and a trickle came out. i am going to change the filter again. i blew the fuel line out and still no change. it has a new lift pump but i think it was a faulty pump. what do you think.
