drove my bronco around this morning. Went to drive it this afternoon, and the fuel pump wont come on. I checked all fuses9in cab and under hood) and the inertia shut-off switch. Ran codes, pulled 542:"fuel pump secondary curcuit failure: PCM to ground" Any know what this could be? I also checked the voltage to and from the shutoff switch. 3 wire conector, when unpluged: 12v, 6v, and 0v. When pluged in: 12v, 6v, and 6v. Anyone know if this is right, or wants to check theirs? Tomorrow I will probably have to drop the tank and check the leads into the pump.
Had same problem on an 88. Problem was ground to the computer was lost. The computer is grounded by a dedicated wire that goes directly to the big negative lug on the battery. Typically there are two fine wires potted into the mainlug; one is for the EEC computer and the other is to ground the ABS computer. The wire goes to a connector by the radiator. In my case the connector appeared normal but was badly corroded inside. Recommend you trace this wire to the computer to ensure it is continuous.
try replacing the fuel pump selenoid. there cheep and easy to get to. (it worked when my 89 stopped) I do believe you can check the pump without pulling the tank. the wires are on the front/top of the tank. and there is a connector there. a meter with smaller pins should let you ohm it out.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-Dec-01 AT 09:42 PM (EST)]Hey this is alittle of the subject. But I was wondering since you owned a 89 Bronco, if you could help me out. I happen to be inquiring about the same year of Bronco. I was wonderin if it had a fuel shut off switch and if so were might it be located?
Even a little more off topic - Your username suggests that you have a blower on something. What do you have a supercharger on, if any? I got an '89 Tbird Supercoupe...gotta love it when that blower starts screamin'! Just curious...
