A few days ago I posted a thread in regards to the oil leak I have. I have pinpointed the leak. As some others replied it is a known fault on the late 90's PSD. I was told by the mechanics that this plug is a bitch to get out and replace, but is done with the right tools and patience. Ford apparently updated the bad plug with a better o-ring. My question is has anyone here replaced theirs before? They told me it is pretty much a one shot deal. If you bugger the 1/2" drive hole in the plug, its all over but the crying. My 3" inch downtube has to be loosened and moved back in order to access the plug. I can either open my checkbook, or try this one myself. This galley plug WILL get worse over time, causing performance issues.
it works best to get it out with a 1/2" drive flex head ratchet. i have a snapon one that worked wonderful. i took a drift and hit the plug, then tapped the head to get some vibration to loosen up the loctite. i broke the plug loose then turned it back and forth a few times then back it out the rest of the way.
If you have the "Time and Patience" do it yourself and save about $300-$400. I agree with barebackjake, the flex is the only way to go and also shock it like he said.
How long of a breaker bar did you use? I have about a 30 inch bar that I could use. Is it absolutely necessary to move your downpipe back out of the way a bit? I have all the tools, I am just scared to do it I guess at the end of the day.
i didnt use a breaker bar, the handle on that ratchet is about 12" long and that was enough. yeah the dp does have to move outta the way. i dont blame ya for being leary on this one. i was too i think if the steps are taken it should be fine. something to think if since its leakin its lubin the threads, could break it loose a tad and turn the motor over to get more oil on the threads too....
Just curious how much of a mess it made when you got the plug out? I was told that you leak about a quart of oil out when the plug comes loose, making a mess. Is this true? I have a 12" ratchet that should work perfect. Thanks for all the info, I am going for it! One other thing, did you re-apply thread lock when you placed the new plug?
Heck, it's only oil. It will clean up just fine with some Simple Green or any other degreaser.
Do you still have the stock Down Pipe? If so, this would be a good time to get an after market DP. With the DP totally out of the way your repair should be made easier IMO. My .02$
Jake, I am frankly surprised you were able to get a drift back in there and against the plug. I guess I will know when I see how much room is made moving the DP.
I've done the driver side one where thiers some room, yup, thier is no loctight found on mine but the o-ring was junk, went to a double raised o-ring with a backer on it and its been great.
When you go to start the truck, it will be a pain in the ****, it have to prime again and then you need to take it for a boot down the road for a while to work the air out.
When you go to re-start, pull the #9 fuse (this willl keep the injectors from firing) then crank the engine for 30-40 sec. let it rest for 4-5 min. repeat, repeat, repeat. Then re-instal the fuse and it should fire up. This cranking and resting lets the air work out of the High Pressure Oil System.
UPDATE! Perfect advice from all here! I just changed the old plug yesterday and all went well! It does take a while for the air to evacuate the upper galley, but it is running smooth now! I recommend to anyone that has this problem to DO IT YOURSELF and save 150.00 in labor! It really is NOT vary hard. 7.00 plug and a 30.00 1/2 flex drive is all you need. Thanks for all the help! Suber
