Is there any way to tell if there are any OBD codes with out a scanner? In other words, should the check engine light come on to indicate that there are codes?
There are a few "soft" faults that can be stored without illuminating the CEL, but those rarely cause a performance issue. Every "hard" fault will trigger the CEL. With the CEL off and no scan tool you would never know if there were any codes stored.
Hi Scott,
Thank you very much for the reply. Other than really poor fuel mileage, we're not having any trouble with the truck. I was looking into possibly getting a scanner for our cars and trucks, just to have.
Thanks,
Ed
Without knowing what truck you have, I would have to ask:
Have you replaced / cleaned your air filter?
Have you replaced your fuel filter?
Have you changed your tranny fluid and filter?
Is your alignment correct?
Are your tires properly inflated?
Can you define "poor fuel mileage" please? I have a "large" truck, see my signature, and I average about 16 mpg combined highway and city.

Good idea. I've got a decent scan tool, but it's not worth beans on the diesel. The laptop based software seems to be the most inclusive for the diesel trucks.
