Trans leak question - need help

Hello,

I have a 65 F100 with a 3 spd manual trans, column shift. I just finished replacing my rear main engine seal - no leaks now. I drained the transmission case of gear lube (was low) and replaced with just shy of two quarts - stopped at the overflow hole.

I now have gear lube leaking out of the clutch shift fork boot. It only seems to happen during driving - the leak stops when parked. Trans works great with no noise. Clutch is working fine.

I'm thinking the front trans seal is leaking. Can you think of any other seals that might cause a leak in this area ? I"ve already replaced the rear trans seal (hard as a rock).

Can the front trans seal be changed without pulling the trans ?

Also, I presume a front seal leak means my clutch is living on borrowed time ?

thanks.

Bad news is that you have to pull the trans, but it is easy after that AND you will be able to take your clutch apart and clean it up. Worst case you will want to replace the driven disk, but wait until you can take a look at it to decide. The rotation of the clutch assembly will have thrown the oil away from the disk, so maybe you will not have to spend much other than your time and the small seal.

(The rear seal being "hard as a rock" was an indication that the front seal probably also needed attention.)
