Mating flywheel with converter....

Guys what is the best way to mate a 302EFI motor up with an E4OD tranny. Me and a friend tried to mate up a built 302 in my truck today and it was kinda raining hard so we gave up till it dries up. The only thing that really hung us up was the fact that we couldn't really get the flywheel mated with the torque converter. What we did and I was recommended to do this was to set the motor on the mounts first, don't tighten the nuts keep them loose and then try to connect the tranny with the engine? Any tips and tricks lining up the tranny with the engine? This is a 92 F-150 4x4 lifted truck also....

is the flywheel made to go with that converter?

also check the end of the crank, make sure there is not a pilot shaft bearing in there.

I jack the trany up enough to allow the motor to mate with it up off the mounts. You can even take the mounts off the engine until you get it mated then re install the mounts.

NEVER EVER FORCE THE BELLHOUSING TO THE MOTOR. It should slide together with ease if not something is wrong. Pull the converter and make sure it fits the flywheel.

No, I am actually only about a inch away from getting those threaded studs through the flywheel... I am almost home, just have to wait for the weather to get alot better. I can't believe its snowing in April and it's actually sticking to the ground here in KS lol!

Take 4 old long small block head bolts, cut the heads off, smooth the cut ends, maybe cut a slot to ease removal, then thread these into 4 of the bell bolt holes in the engine. jack the trans. up, align the holes with the studs, then slide the transmission home. When you get the trans close, you can rotate the converter to get the studs aligned with the flexplate holes. Whatever you do, do not force the two together using the bolts, if it's stuck, chances are it's at the front pump gear, you bust the gear trying to force the converter into the gear.
