shifter linkage problems.....

hi all, I have a 95 F-250 ,automatic,351,4x4. The problem I am having is that my shifter has a lot of play in it. Sometimes I have to hold it up to start it, and I have to feel for reverse. Is this an easy fix? I have tilt steering and had the truck in the shop last year for a acuater switch for my ignition. they boned me pertty good and charged me 5 hours labor. Had I known that I may have just got a colunm from a local salvage yard. Just need some opinions on what the best fix is for me. I am kinda mechanically incline for the easy stuff. The only good thing about this is my wife don't ask to drive it anymore. thanks all, Bob

Under the dash the shift cable attaches to an arm that is bolted to the column linkage with two torx head screws. The screws come loose and give the symptoms you discribe. Buy some loctite, put some on the treads and reinstall. That should make everything good as new.
