As you all may or may not know, i have a 73 f100 4x4. I was curious about the transfer case and how easy, or hard; cheap or expensive it would be to rebuild it. Just in case your wondering, it's a dana 12 transfer case and it's very small, it only have either 4 low or 2 wheel drive at any time, it's not like the np t-cases with 4 high, low, and 2 high, low. Any info would be highly appreciated and feedback would be outstanding...thanks.

Reason: mispelling.
Think you ar talking about a single speed "Dana 21". You are right it is a very small case, and even though it is a gear driven one, it is not that desireable, and considered a little bit weak. I can say I have never broken one, partly because I have never run one.
I believe you would be time, and money ahead by upgrading rather than re-building. If you re-build you are only getting in return what you already have. For almost the same time, and money, you copuld find an upgrade 2 speed case, and be much happier with your modification.
From my studies it will not be a simple xfer case swap. It seems the shaft between the tranny and xfer case is unique, and will fit no other case. I believe you would have to replace the tranny shaft before you could bolt up a new xfer case. I just scored a parts truck with the NP435 bolted to a NP205. Got a high pinion D44 to boot. I think this will be a much simpler swap than trying to mix/match to make the things fit.
I had a 75 shortbed/ 360/ np435/ dana t-case, the transmission case its self had an entirely different bolt pattern then the np435 in my 79. The tail shaft is also a different size with different bolt pattern. I you are going to switch t-cases you are going to need the whole set-up or you might be able to get an adapter plate not sure. But from my experience you cant change the tail shaft either.
well, that goes to show how the new stuff even in the 70's is just a pain in the rectal area....the dana that i have now still works, it just leaks and i have no idea on how to fix the leaks at all....if you all have any hints, please feel free to post, thanks for the in put all.
My D21 leaks from the rear output as well. I found a complete rebuild kit to include bearings, seals, and gaskets. I think it was $95. Just do a "Dana 21" search. Or PM me and I'll let you know where I saw it.

You could fix that with a homemade gasket. Either use some gasket material, or cut one from a cereal box after the kids are done with breakfast. Just remove the cover (little plate) and use it as a template. Even a "corn flakes" gasket will last a decade or so.
