I bought a used 04 Screw 4x4 with 3.73 RAR last fall. I love the truck and the purchase was made in anticipation of obtaining a boat this spring. However, after our last camping trip in our smallish pop up camper thi past week, the wife is entertaining the thought of upgrading to a larger travel trailer. I've been looking and think the size we need is roughly 30-33 foot. Those of you with F150s that pull such a trailer, do you ever wish you had a F250 instead?
When I was looking for a truck, I desperately wanted a diesel, but couldn't justify pulling just a boat with it. I had no idea we would be considering a new travel trailer so soon.
What does a 30-33 foot travel trailer weigh? They must be at least 8000 lb's, and up from there depending on trailer length. I think you'll be well over the tow limit for a Screw, no?
i pull a 24 foot car trailer with my toys in it that weighs over 8k when full with no problems. Brakes on these trucks are fair and a good brake controller is key. i had a 250 and 350 before this truck, both with 5.4L just like my f150. I would say the 150 pulls just as good, especially since you have the 3.73 ratio. I know my truck is rated at 9300 lbs towing. when you hit hills and such you'll just have to lock out overdrive so it doesnt roam, but i had to do the same thing with the super duty as well.
You should do well as long as you hook it up right. Good stabilizer bars will be the key. (or, as most people call them around here, weight distribution hitch?)
Welcome to the world of Travel Trailers. I tow a 27' TT (6600 GVW) with my 05 5.4 SuperCab. It does a great job. A TT over 30' would most likely put you close to the max numbers. You might try checking out the TrailerLife link with your towing question. Be sure to include the make and model of the TT you're considering. http://www.trailerlife.com/cforum/in...tings/forum/41
a weight distribution hitch will work wonders for you. the truck can easily handle it. just make sure it's one of those 2-3 times a year things. more frequency might dictate you get a superduty
Something else I might add, I live in Central North Carolina. This means any trips North is across a mountain. Any trip West is across another mountain. The only direction I can go that's flat is East toward the coast or maybe South toward Florida.
If I'm going to pop for a new TT, I'll be using it more than a couple times per year.
in that case, it's a question about how thick your wallet is vs how much wear you want to put on your trucks drivetrain. sucks that you just bought it though.
I'm sure you'd get plenty of years of trouble free towing in any case
