1983 Ford 150 Explorer

I traded a camper for an old beater 4 wheel drive. It has a inline 6. I use it on the farm to haul wood, hunt and fourwheelin'. It has a four speed manual in it. The gearing on this thing is kind of radical, it is definately a high rpm truck. Is that normal for the make, model, year?

Just curious....

Thanks

An I-6 has never been considered a high rpm performer in stock configuration.

Yes I realize that, but the gearing in the tranny and/or rearend makes it so you have to rev it pretty good to start out and through the following three gears so that it runs normal. It might be the tranny, but then again it may just be that I am not used to the truck. It is just a lot different than any truck I have ever driven in the past.

Thanks for the reply...

I'm thinking you have the 4 spd overdrive. Final gear turns 30% fewer revs. Better highway mileage.

If it's got a T-18 (code F) the first gear ratio is ~6.3:1, so it would wind up pretty quickly.

Is the clutch slipping?

Yes it is a 4 speed w/overdrive. The clutch doesn't seem to slip, then again I just putt around in it around the farm, never had out of 2nd or 3rd gear. Maybe this next winter, I'll bring it home and replace the clutch. It could be getting thin and just getting jumpy because of worn clutch pads.

Thanks
