Since I have been trying to keep my RPM's down under 2 grand (seeing how that helpls mileage) I only hear it real softly about 1700 RPM. However, when I drive like I want to it's loud and starts at 1700 RPM and goes until I either let off or the tranny shifts.
It sounds like a metalic rub/swish/rattle sound. I don't have a way to make a sound clip.
Is it the inspection cover on the bellhousing? It seems ford would have put a bolt in the bottom of it but there isn't a space for one. I checked the other two bolts and they're good.
Catalytic converter clogged? Every so often it won't start. It'll turn over and act like it's starting but it run for a second or two then shut down. Also, when it's cold out every so often I get a high pitched whine squeel from under the front half of the truck somewhere. It's not a belt, has a different sound to it I have not heard before in my other trucks.
The noise is the bell housing dust shield and the IAC is the most likely cause for the starting and shutting off issue.
Bend the dust shield a bit or put double sided tape (take the backing off one side) on the shield to cushion it. Clean or replace the IAC for the idle problem.
the start up whine is most likely the power steering pump. try sawing the wheel back and forth at start up and let us know. ive had this problem on 2 exs and an SD.
My guess for the rattle would be a heat shield on the exhaust pipe located before the cat. Check the crappy spot welds. I bet one or two have failed causing a vibration at certain RPM.
It is well know the torque converter heat shield rattles like mad between 1700-2100 rpm on V10's. Notice how the shield is mounted with two bolts on the side and the shield fits outside and inside on top and bottom. Remove the heat shield and drive it around. If the noise is gone....bingo.
Ohh, the whine isn't at start up. It's after I have driven. Sometimes it's while I am stopped and sometimes when driving but at low speed (10 mph and under). I haven't oinned down what conditions it happens in any further than that yet.
Whats up Jay? I see your over here looking for advise. You couldn't have made a better choice for info. FTE has the best info on Ford trucks on the net. Good to see you here.
