ok so over the last couple of days ive noticed a really bad noise comming from under my truck.
the noise sounds like knifes being sharpend. it gets faster the faster i go. and it does this in any gear (clutch in or out) and only when under power along with the noise is a noticable vibration in the cab.
I think its comming from the diff, should i put off the diff cover and look for shavings and worn gears?
any suggestions or experience with noises like this?
could it be the carrier bearring? (its an ext cab)
truck is a 1991 F-250XL ext cab 7.3L with the ZF-5 trans and i think there 3.55 gears.
(ive posted this in the trans, driveshaft, diff section too but it not every active and you guys are more familiar with these trucks)
checked the u-joints and theres no play in any of them, also checked the carrier bearing, also no play. there is play throughout the entire driveshaft(about maybe 1/2 inch) i just assumded that was normal?
check the pinion nut at the rear drive shaft yoke......it is most likely not tight...... torque it to proper speck.........hopefully this fixes the problem.....if not then its time to check the rear pinion bearing and carrier bearings and ring gear/pinion settings............
ok thanks for the input ill be sure to check all those things tommorrow.
under further inspection the carrier bearing can move around in its housing.... is this normal or should it be replaced, im thinking its needs to be replaced.
any got instructions or have a link to do this?

Sent email....... with extras....... I would definitely do all the universals when you do the center hanger bearing...... ensure you get the HDuty ones, I got mine from Ford, but now you can get them anywhere with the grease knipples.
IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Always mark the alignment of all the parts of the driveshaft with a mark that cannot be cleaned off......... this assures correct alignment so you will not spend the next 2 years trying to find a vibration.

Reason: More info
Alright so ive got my replacement u-joints and a replacement center bearing.
so ive taken the two piece drive shaft out and now i need to take the old center bearing off. it is beaing help in place by a Bearing Retainer Ring, which is obviously pressed on, so is it possible to knock this off to slide the center bearing off, or should i take it to a machine shop and have them take it off?
also the new center bearing is slightly different then the last, it doesnt seam to have a direction to put it on. The new center bearing didnt come with another Bearing Retainer Ring so should i have the machine shop press it back on to hold the new center bearing in place or will the new center bearing not need it?
another question, what kind, brand or grease should i use in the u-joints and slip joint?
I had a machine shop do mine.... better to press things off/on than beat the hell out of it and damage something. That retainer should be re installed..... yes Any brand, but I use a synthetic grease...... Do not clean the slip joint with a wire brush it has a special covering over the splines.
alright, thanks PLC7.3, i did alot of searching and all they said was press the bearing on and nothing about the retainer so thanks for clearing that up.
and in the removal and instalation guide you sent me it says use a premium long life grease. so ill get a synthetic longlife grease.
thanks again PLC for all the help, ill get back to you on how it went.
