another one Pulled the Trigger...
I've been reading around here for a short while, thinking about making the plunge. I owned my first powerstroke direct injection back when they first came out, 1994. It was a manual trans 250 4x4 supercab longbed, you know the truck.
Since I didn't haul cattle around for a livin' I changed the gear ratios from 4.10 to 3.55. Talk about a movin' machine! directly coupled rubber to the engines RMP's, yea! (and if I'd sneeze, the truck would jump, lol ). I still could go from 1-3-5 or 2-3-5. (between 2 & 3 was a stretch). I would get around 22mpg. (flat ground & empty) Put about 15k on it and was tired of shifting every blessed place I went. The thing was a beast. However, I have to mention that back then I came from a sports car driver to the beastly PSD 4x4.
Well..........this past week (and 13 years later) I just Couldn't pass up an opportunity to be back in one again, this time no stick! And I will have to admit, they sure have improved these things! If there is bouncing around, it's the road. An all around awsome handling machine. All the creature comforts. This time it's a 350 KR CC LB. WOW! Right away I noticed how the trans wants to keep the engine between 2-3k. mostly.
With the newer 3.73's, I see 17mpg. Even the way I drive! in time I hope to gain a better feel for the shear size again. The "Camper package" upgrade and the fact that it's already a "one ton", gives me that beefy truck feeling again, either it will buck the front end like on a washboard road if its a small imperfection or those pesky sections of freeway that we all experience, (the type that make you talk like you're riding in a big rig), or it will absorb the heavier issues that come with road moguls, bumps and dips at speed as a suspension should. Either way, after putting on roughly 1200 miles, I find this rig to please even the most descriminating man. (yes, this IS a 'man's' truck). One that can do most anything from a sweaty long haul dragging most any GVW coupled to the rear, and after cleaning up, to a family night out with comfort room for 5.
you think it's too much? ........naw!
