I have been reading on this forum that a weak link that may leave you on the side of the road is the CPS. My truck is running fine, but when the engine is turning over before it starts, the tach does not move. As soon as it hits and fires the tach registers. But before it hits, the tach does not even bump. Does this mean my CPS is going bad and I should replace it? Right now I have no drivability issues, but I don't want to be stranded somewhere when a little preventive maintenance could prevent it. Thanks.
I wouldn't worry about the tach not moving before the engine fires.
It doesn't mean your CPS is bad.
I carry a spare CPS and 10mm socket with a ratchet in the truck.
You should purchase a spare CPS as Dan mentioned. They can be had for around $50 via Ebay. Carry that and the 10mm socket/ratchet/flat blade screwdriver, and you'll be good to go.
Thanks for the information, my truck is a 2000 model. It runs fine and starts good. The tach just doesn't move until it starts. The price on ebay must have gone up.
i have found that o'reilly auto parts (chain) allegedges they get the same parts as NAPA. They will also price match any internet site, if you print it out and take it in. Lastly, they offer a lifetime guarantee on the CPS. Granted, i have not had to use it but it was nice to know. Just an FYI.
