Hey guys I need some recommendation,
I'm working on the front cover and I need to know what's the right sealant for the bolts, I got Permatex hardening and non hardening, and also RTV gray,
I'm trying to stop a coolant leaking around the bolt hole, so I need some good thread sealant, can the Permatex hardening be a problem later if I need to remove the bolt later?
Any ideas?
Hardening agents around a gasket would cause problems down the road as the gasket will want to move but thehardener wont allow it to. I'd suggest the RTV as long as it has a really high thermal protection point. I think the red stuff has the better thermal rating. The RTV will move around just like the gasket will want to and as long as you apply it on a clean and oil free surface it'll stick just fine to whatever is surrounding it.
High temp RTV how much temp is between the block and the front cover?
Do I really need the red RTV, I thought the gray was enough it's rated 500 f
My only worry with the Permatex is it might lock the bolt, and making it later impossible to remove without breaking, but I'm not sure if it gets this hard like the JB weld stuff?
RTV won't lock the bolt...it's soft stuff, it'll be like unscrewing it from rubber when you remove it. Grey RTV that's rated to 500*F will easily do the job. The bolt won't see temperatures that hot anytime soon (hopefully).
I would like to know why it's leaking from a bolt.

read my thread "Front Cover Leaking"
And I was referring to the permatex 1, "Form a gasket Sealent" this stuff is different than RTV it gets solid hard when dries it's made for pipe joints and threads, but the label said for permanent repairs, so I'm not sure if it locks the bolt once cured?
