Shudder from stop while turning
THis is in a '98 Expedition EB with limited slip and the 5.4l.
I get a frame/ driveline shudder when taking off from a stop and turning. Seems worse turning right, than left and happens ONLY when hot, say after 15 miles or so.
Had the rearend rebuilt. Both axle shafts replaced, bearings, etc. LS clutches were OK. Refilled rearend with Ford oil and friction modifier. Ran 1000 miles and drained it, then refilled with oil and friction modifier again. STILL does it.
Mechanic thinks it may be the clutches in the transfer case?!? They flushed and refilled the transfer case 2 times Monday (for free cause of all the hassle). THe shudder is better, but not gone.
Does this make sense? Would the clutches in the transfer case cause this??? Is there a friction modifier for the transfer case? Any ideas welcome.
Have heard that these trucks have problems with many sensors associated with the cases. The biggest trouble area is the GEM sensor. It collects water in the plug, and does some pretty crazy things.
Now before you start tearring everything apart, have you simply tried to put more friction modifier in the ear end? Nothing is written in stone that says a prticular amount is required. You may have some clutches that are stubborn, and requires a little more modifier. I would try to add some more before you go crazy looking for this shudder. Bet you a cold beer it will go away just by adding some more????

It is a 98, so it has the 2H selector yet. The mechanic thinks that the clutch pack at the rear of the TC that engages the AWD is where it is at.
