ok i have just bought my very first 4WD bronco. and i was wondering what are the right methods of shifting it in to the 4x4. its a 1984 ford bronco with manual hubs. there was a little paper on the visor but that has now torn off. also why can't i get ti to go down to 4WDL? and when drvin it seems its all over the road. is this normal(i wasn't drivin it on asfault, we just had 6 inches of snow and i was drivin on that)
thanx
First off, is your Bronco manual or automatic? Before shifting into 4WD, lock the front hubs. I am not sure about '84, but my '88 F-150 would allow me to shift into 4-HI while moving. I just pulled back on the lever. To get into 4-LO, you have to place the transmission in neutral (both manual and auto). Then slowly put the lever into 4-LO. It may be tough to get there, but it can be done. Then place your tranny back in drive or first, and go!
Since you just bought it, I would lock in the hubs and jack the front up and turn the front wheels by hand. Make sure the axle is turning for each wheel. Then take your hands at the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock position and wiggle the tire to check for worn ball joints. Put your hands at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock and wiggle the tire to check for loose tie rod ends and linkage.
