Your Beginnings

I'll sign the papers for a new 2007 250-diesel. New to diesel. Could you remember your beginnings and give me the "do-s" and "don’ts"? Also, how do I make the truck last as long as the engine?

Thanks
Daniel

There's a pretty good article in the tech folder on the 6.0 forum regarding break-in procedures. Also check out the diesel supplement in the owners manual for Ford quidelines.

As far as do's -

Change oil at recommended intervals, using correct rated oil (use the brand you like, just make sure it has the correct rating for diesel). Although the manual says it takes 15 qts of oil, most find that 13.5-14 qts is all that is required. Overfilling has been known to cause problems.

Use OEM filters (oil and fuel). Motocraft oil filters can be purchased at WalMart for about $20.00. I have heard that Fram filters are exactly the same and a few bucks cheaper, but have not compared them. Fuel filters can be purchased at International dealers for about $35.00, which is quite a bit cheaper than at the Ford dealer.

Most will tell you that the stock air filter is as good or in most cases, better, than any aftermarket filter, so I personally recommend keeping it stock.

With the introduction of the ultra low sulfur fuel, a fuel additive is recommended for added lubrication. Lot's of good ones out there, just make sure it doesn't have alcohol in it.

Don'ts -

Excessive idling and short trips have been said to cause problems. My driving habits changed recently and most of my trips are short (under 5 miles rt). I haven't noticed any problems, but I do change my oil a little sooner than I used to. Again, most will tell you to take it out and give it a good workout now and then.

Check out the 6.0 forum, tons of advice out there. I'm just trying to summarize what I have seen there.

Diesel Kleen is a good fuel additive.
