Anything over 50 and the gauge starts jumping. Used to just jump 5 over and under, now it jumps all over the place sometimes hovering at the right speed for a second. I have searched the tranny and found noe speedo cable coming out of it. I have replaced the speend sensor ing the rear diff. Anyone got any ideas?
What year? My '94 Ranger did this and it was the speedometer head itself going out.
From what I was told, the speedo bouncing when at lower speeds is the cable or gear in the tranny. It varying wildly at high speeds is the speedometer head.
Can you hear a whining noise or something to that effect when it does it? It was pretty pronounced on my truck.
Nope, no whinning, no excess noises. Nuttin. I am stumped. Ihave had a speed cable go out before but it was on a '67 Chev. I hace looked over every square inch of the tranny and can find no cable coming out. It is also a 4x4, if that makes any differnce in this issue. I'm a newby 'round these parts.... how do you set up a signature with your truck and info?

Reason: forgot something...
Already replaced tthe speed sensor. Did some searching through posts here and found one about pulling rear housing and cleaning the ring the sensor picks up(forgot the real name). The wires coming out of the sensor looked to be in good shape. No cracks or kinks, but I have no idea where they tie into the 'puter.

The VSS signal goes to the ABS and the PSOM. The PSOM modifies the signal and the relays the information to the PCM.
The PSOM drives the Speedometer.
I've had this happen to me before. Find your transfer case & look for the speedo cable where it attatches. I'm just assuming you have a cable. If not then dissregard. Anyways find the cable attachment point. Its possibly loose & the gear is not engaging properly, or the gear is worn or broke.
did you ever get this figured out? my speedo doesnt work on my 94 bronco. the sensor on the rear diff is for the abs. the vss is a totally different item and is located some place else just unable to find out where. it seems people are calling that sensor on the rear diff a vss when its not. I to will check my psom to see if there is a problem there.

Sorry but the one on your rear end is the VSS sensor & the ABS sensor.
It is not wired like the F-series as you have 4WABS, it just feeds the 4WABS module and then the 4WABS module feeds the PSOM. Then the PSOM feeds the speed control and the PCM.
ok. i guess thats where the confusion is. i may also have a psom in another dash incase thats the issue as well. would it matter if it came from a deisel f250?
