Hi all, just joined after searching this site most of the day.
I am helping a friend install a junkyard motor in an 88F250, 7.3 NA.
When he got it, the IP housing eas loose and missing a bolt. To me it looks like it was removed and put back on before we got it.
The engine is in and running, but has very little power. It runs very smooth at idle, puts out a lot of white smoke. The noise level is also very low. No rattle even at advanced timing.
Tried adjusting timing as per instructions here (static timing), and there is virtually no difference in starting or power. It just smokes more black as the timing is advanced.
I am thinking the pump gear may be off a tooth or two. Are there witness marks on the gears, or how can I check this when I pull the pump and housing off?
Hello Ga truck280......did you use the balancer mark as your TDC???.........if you did....you may find that the outer ring of the balancer has "slipped" and not giving you a true TDC.............
In my opinion, All of your symptoms:
very little power
low level diesel knock
white smoke (when not caused by water)
when you have white smoke and advance the timing some and the smoke turns black..............
are indicating retarded Injector timing....................

crossbones
I am thinking retarded FI timing as well. With the IP housing loose when we got the engine, and not knowing the engine history, I am leaning toward someone having removed the IP via pulling the housing, then reinstalling with the gears out of time.
