what 4bbl intake will fit?

Hey every one,

i have a 1960 ford Panel that I am putting an 1978 LTD 400 engine and trans combo in. It has the stock 2 bbl carb on it and it ran really nice before I pulled it (4 days ago). What I am wondering is I have a 4bbl holley economaster that I want to put on it and don't know what years or vehicles had a stock 4bbl intake that I could use?

I guess I should mention the reason i am doing this is cuz i am trying to get the best gas milage possible out of it. I have alreday changed the rear end to 275's will run dual exhaust, have lowered it and running 235 75/15's on back and 215 75/15's in front. so if any of you have any suggestions. I would really appreciate it!
Bubba

There were no production 4V manifolds for the 400. You will need to get a Weiand or Edelbrock manifold to fit. Some used units are available but beware, -many have been machined and wont fit properly or ported which destroys their performance characteristics.

Ditto what Eric said,
but you also have the option of getting spacers, which allow the use of 351C manifolds. However, I would go with either the Weiand or the Edelbrock dual plane manifolds.

Don't loose heart so quickly. On my second day looking I found a used Edelbrock manifold locally, on Craigslist. I have seen them on ebay too.

Just watch what I mentioned. I have seen any number of altered manifolds being peddled as "like new".

I was wondering how porting an intake manifold destroys it's performance characteristics. Thanks.

Guys read hot rod magazines about "gasket matching" and porting the manifolds and try it all the time which is a big mistake since they haven't got a clue what works and what doesn't. Racers do it because they have experience and access to machines to give them feedback with developing port profiles. They also buy the same type and manufacturing lot of gaskets by the case and hand select them. They also have special fixtures to align the parts so they can control their tolerances. The port sizes on a mass market intake manifold are carefully developed on the dyno taking manufacturing tolerances for all the parts, gaskets, and fasteners into consideration so that all airflow goes from a smaller passage into a larger one and in the right direction. Edelbrock has a warning about modifying ports in their manual.

Thanks for the information, I was about to get my intake ported for a cleveland build. I guess I'll do some research before I get this done.

Buy a dozen manifolds with a like number of heads to ruin and some dyno and flow bench time to sort it all out if you want to do it. Otherwise leave it alone.

Not to say you cant clean up a burr or some flash in a few places but leave the surface finish alone and leave the mating faces of the head and manifold perfectly sharp. The tendency is to get carried away and ruin things tho. I saw a guy radius the edges of the manifold and heads once so nobody would get cut on them.... I just had to walk away.
