It was spewing fluids from the valve covers and power steering pump and it had a high, passenger side, knock while driving (But ran good with no smoke or misses and started on the first crank).
Anyway, I have it down to just the long block and intake and was wondering if there is anything I should check before I put it back together. (I was hoping the knocking was valve train related, but the pushrods, rockers, etc. look great.) I'm paranoid about pulling the glow plugs to do a compression check/leakdown test.
Should I just suck it up and go for it, or what does everyone recommend? Is there anything else I should look at "while I'm there"?
Knocks aren't good but don't automaticaly assume that a knock is mechanical. I have seen fuel knocks that are really loud. Engines will resinate and make some "bad" noises.
If it runs good and has good oil pressure let it keep eating.
Removing the rest of the engine and doing the head gaskets would be a wise move. Just a bit costly on the new head studs...... do not reuse the bolts. Check the back of the heads for coolant leaks, a sign the hd gaskets are gone.... common problem.
I'm not 100% sure, but shouldn't the only change be the cases. The diesel C6 innards should go right into a gas 460's case (which are readily available). I went through a similiar swap when I went from a 360 to a 460 in my F100.
I haven't completely researched the differences between the gas and diesel C6's, so I can't say for sure one way or the other.
And I have so much "stuff" laying around for a 460 that I could probably build a complete running car if I put my mind to it!!!
But I would rather keep the diesel.... I already have a 460 in the F100.
