Too many miles?

Hey fellas I'm in the market for a new truck, i was planning on getting a superduty but then i found this 2004 F150 super cab will all the options... anyways it's a 4x4 with the 5.4. the only problem is that it has 136,000 miles on it. I know this probably means it's highway miles.. but if i'm going to be spending this much money on it ($16,000) is it worth it with the miles? I mean what will i be having to replace soon? This is probably a stupid question due to the fact that most of you arn't even close to this in mileage but hopefully someone will know!!

Thanks,
Brian

I'd say do some more searching around... I bought my 04 screw 4x4 with 59k miles for 17k. I know the prices have gone up lately, a friend of mine liked my truck so much he wants to get one and cant find one for around the same price/mileage, but still with a bit of patience i think one would come up sooner than later. things to look out for:

spark plugs, by 136k, they most likely have been done already, so you should be in the clear, but those have a tendancy to break inside the head. do a search for the plug threads on this forum.

4x4 electronic shift on the fly has some issues on 04 trucks, the integrated wheel ends and an actuator/solenoid deal have some issues with humidity/snow melting in the winter and causing stuff to blow out, making 4x4 not engaging properly. there's a fix for them where ford is putting a shield over the actuator and a different bracket i believe for the IWE. this problem may not appear now that it's all dry outside...

other than that, mod motors will run for a long time if you leave them alone and keep up with the maintenance.

That sounds a little steep to me. It would have to be a fully loaded Lariat in very good condition. Maybe try www.kbb.com or www.nada.com with all the options that you know of on the truck and see what kind of price it gives you. Hope this helps.

Do you want to buy my 2004 F150 Supercab XLT 4X4. It has the 5.4 liter with towpack for $20k? It only has only 40,000 miles on it and the warranty it till 72,000 miles.

New tires and brakes all the way around.

Unless you are paying cash, most banks will not finance anything that has over 100K on it. Price also seems steep to me. I'd keep on looking.

sounds like a lariat, a step above my xlt, but for the mileage that's still a wee steep. if they can knock it down to like 14.5 it would be right in line IMO. or if it had 100k miles only.

the truck is 3 yrs old with 136k miles, and they're seriously asking $16k?

wow, that must be some mighty powerful skunk weed they're smoking.

you can buy a brand new xl for that price. a low mileage 04/05 should be about $20k or so and still be moderately decked out. and by low mileage, I mean <60,000 miles

My cousin's 05 recently passed 150,000 miles and he has done nothing to it. It still has the original brakes and plugs. He has to keep is vehicles 100,000 or 3 years, whichever comes last and when his is due for replacement in August, he plans on keeping it longer. It will have about 175,000 miles on it by that time.

I think the price you were quoted is very high. If you have need to sell it, you would have a very difficult time selling it due to the miles.

WAY too many miles for that year, and the price is out there! What's your hurry, man? There's lots of Ford trucks out there, don't let your money burn a hole in your pocket. Check your newspaper ads, both dealer and individuals, just drive around and look, lots of good buys aren't even advertised. Do you get "Pickup Trader" magazine or similar up there? You can do way better than that, just takes a little time and patience, a good buy WILL come along. Good luck.

according to kbb. the trade in value is 12,600, private party is 15,250, and retail value is 19,200 and that is the dealers asking price. I didn't have all the options but i put lariat, moonroof, pw,pd, power seat. I would say between 12,000 and 15,000 is where you can expect to pay. But I wouldn't touch 3 year old truck w/ 136,000 miles for 12,000. just my opinion..
