I had the cat and muffler removed and a 3.5" pipe welded in it's place onThursday. The truck ran fine the rest of the day (only drove around town) Friday I drove about 100 miles on a trip and just before I arrived I felt what I would describe as a "surge" on the freeway. (the truck suddenly powered up) Then when I got off the freeway I noticed it again a few times. I parked and shut the truck off to go in the store, came back out went to start it and it started and died twice. The 3rd time it was fine. The next morning the truck ran fine for the 100 mile trip back home.
Saturday It surged a couple times again and also did the start and die thing. Today I made a 500 mile trip and the "surging" continued on several occasions. At one point I stopped in traffic and the idle dropped down and I was afraid it was going to die.
To be more specific the "surge" felt like if you were to suddenly tap the go pedal for a second.
This truck has ran flawlessly until friday morning... Is it possible for the exhaust work to cause such an issue?
I have had mine straight piped for about 20k now and have had no symptoms. I would say you definatly have something going on, exhaust withstanding. What year, model, and flash version are you running, may make it easier for someone to help you.
Sorry I need to update my sig. It's an 04, 6.0 F250. Im not sure of what flash I'm running. I still have my tow/haul feature. I havent had the recent injector "buzz" flash performed. It ran perfectly up until this point...
Just changed out my ICP sensor, due to the same issues. Staright piped my 04 6.0 F350 for about 40,000km now. The surge came after they did the Injector Buzz flash, Took it back in and had it back in about hour. It was reading on the low end for voltage.
Took my 04' in (2 weeks ago) (54k mi)for the exact symptoms. My EGR was unplugged but the dealer insisted it was still causing the problem. They also discovered my turbo was leaking oil internally. So they cleaned the EGR and replaced the turbo. Is the ICP sensor part of the turbo swap? They showed me the old turbo and the electronic sensors were still attatched. So the new turbo must of come w/ new sensors. Maybe that included the ICP. My truck has never ran as good as it runs now. Your problem might be the ICP the exhaust might just be coincidental. How many miles on your truck?

You took it to the dealer with the truck straight piped?

That's interesting that they insisted that the EGR was the problem despite being unplugged? Did they know you had it unplugged or did you plug it back in before you went in?

I've got about 55,000 miles on mine...
I have a stock exhaust, for now. The dealer doesn't care about the exhaust, they will not do any warranty work if I "chip it". Yes I told them right from the get go that the EG (cough) R was unplugged. I stood next to the tech and my truck the whole time he tested it. It threw the EGR code....... he plugged it back in....... reset the test......... it threw a different EGR code. I kept saying the Egr problem should happen in and around idle not while I'm cruising at hiway speeds. The tech said the EGR was so clogged that it wasn't closing all the way. But I never ever saw smoke........ until he plugged the EGR back in. I still really feel like it was the ICP, it felt like (after the surge) the truck was shut off (at highway speeds) and sometimes at idle it would stall. Plus my boost guage never even flickered so it had nothing to do with air it had to be electronic IMO.
i took my truck into the dealer this week for the same problem they told me the surging was from the aftermarket exhaust.....which is a 4"mbrp TB so oasis said exactly one year ago the 18th of this month the icp sensor was replaced once under warrenty when the previos owner had it....so if it gets bad enough that it keeps surging on me or even dies i will replace the icp sensor my self as warrenty ran out today on it.....anyone done one where/how hard is it??? is it just a swap no calibration needed???
Miraculously the problem has seemed to have gone away... I plugged the egr back in. I then ran the truck up to normal operating temp, turned the key off then on for 5 seconds...twice. Then started it and let it idle for 5 minutes. ( I read about this procedure somewhere) The problem seems to have gone away and the CEL has gone off. I believe the problem had something to do with the EGR...
My 04's CEL will be on with anything I do with the EGR valve including plugging into an extra new EGR valve zip tied to the top of the engine. Coming up to time to clean it or just change it. No chip but Gibson exhaust.....Good Luck
