I hava a 2006 f250 PS 6.0L. I've been noticeing alot of sut around the intercooler. I pulled off one of the turbo outlet tubes to the intercooler and noticed oil in it. Is this something to be conserned about or is it normal. I thought that there should not be any oil in it. So is my turbo leaking or going bad. Please someone let me know.
I think the intercooler side is under pressure, sout in the intercooler could be a problem. I would suspect that the seal between the impellers/shaft are leaking a little. Depending on the mileage, it could be normal build up.
A small amount of oil in the intercooler tubes is normal for the 6.0. The 6.0 has a closed crank case ventilation system that dumps the crank case vapors into the intake inlet tube just ahead of the turbo. The crank case vapors have oil mist that eventually coats the entire intake system (CAC tubes, intercooler, and intake) with oil. It doesn't take much oil to make one big mess and it often looks worse than it is. If you go to the tech folder pinned to the top of the 6.0 forum, you'll find an article providing instructions on how to reroute the crank case ventilation to atmosphere. It's on my future projects list.
With that said, it is possible to have a leaking seal on your turbo. However, that doesn't seem to be a major problem with the 6.0 based on what I've read on this site (or should I say haven't read on this site). I also would think a leaking seal would cause a small amount of white smoke from your exhaust and you would see some measureable oil consumption.
