I have a 2000 excursion that has some steering wheel slop. I replaced the ball joints and steering links. I was told that there might be some kind of pressure switch that might be the problem. Has anyone had this problem?
Tighten the gear box approx. 3/4 turn and add a Hellwig rear sway bar. difference is night and day! The X goes from sloppy soft handling, to almost sports car like..... well an 8000lb sports car! LOL
Look at this thread https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...-steering.html. dbtx did an EXCELLENT job of describing this very simple adjustment. I did mine this past Friday...scroll down to dbtx's second reply in the thread to find the step by step instructions...after you read his...come back and read the rest of mine or you may be confused...as I jump ahead with my hints...dbtx walks you thru it nicely...I printed out his text 'just' in-case!
The hardest part is that there is MINIMAL space to get tools into. I used a 5/8" deep well socket to loosen the lock nut after marking the allen screw with a grease pencil. I did 3 1/4 turn adjustments and test drove in between each adjustment.
One trick I used was the socket to loosen the lock nut...then I used an open end wrench at a real angle since space is limited to "hold" the nut while I moved the allen screw (my allen screw was a 3/16")...I moved the allen screw to slightly before I needed it knowing that when I tightened the lock nut, the allen screw would turn more too...
my hats off to dbtx for posting these...very simple and really makes a HUGE improvement.
As 1 Ex camper points out...if you don't have a rear sway bar...I'll throw in another vote on the Hellwig too!
Good luck and if you have any questions...just ask...as I just did this adjustment a couple of days ago.
